Roaming Through Retirement

April--When Snowbird Fly North!

Game Night, a weekly tradition with these snowbird friends, will abruptly come to an end for this season anyway.  One reason why people leave is April and May is our summer time, which is often hot, dry, windy and dusty. This lasts until mid-June when the rainy season starts and the weather becomes phenomenal again until the following April.

We will be staying in Ajijic into early July, which gives us an opportunity to create some new "summer" traditions!  One change will be monthly vacations like the two-week Easter holiday to the USA we took in April, a four-day excursion to the mountain town of Mazamitla in May and a two-week vacation in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas in early June. All a work in progress!

Glorine created a new event designed to bring Mexicans and foreigners together through a social mixer called Connections Among Friends.  Even though lots of snowbirds were gone, the event was a hit! This event is a joint effort between the Lake Chapala Society and the Chapala Chamber of Commerce. The biggest barrier to success is language which they are trying to use technology to overcome it.

A snowbird friend invited us to join them to listen and dance to Blue Jay Slim, a fellow snowbird known for his great Blues music.  He is in the Blues' Hall of Fame. While visiting Carmen in CA, we were impressed with her dedication to her 20 minute rigorous workout six days a week.  We got tired just watching her.

Hunters and fellow Boy Scouters were invited to join the baseball players at Cal-State for the national anthem.  At one of his games we attended, Hunter hit a ground ball to third base and...

We spend Easter weekend with Denise in MN.  After this group hug,  we spent the weekend on an all-out sprint of activities.    The Easter Bunny still makes its annual visit and the kids spend the morning searching for Easter Eggs, each filled with money or candy. Can't leave any behind!

Nephew Tim and Nancy hosted an Easter Dessert party which we attended. Denise kept her Easter Bunny Ears on from tradition they had earlier. We got a sneak preview of Denise's new home.  The north side faces the lake.  The walk-out basement has garage space (for lake toys) rec room and a future bedroom.

The laundry room is off the den on the top floor along with four bedrooms and two baths, most of which have lake views.  The old barn door closes off the laundry.    The main floor is open! This picture is taken from the mud room looking into a great room including kitchen, dining and living room all with a view of the lake.  Window cleaner wanted!!!

The ice hockey season is coming to an end and we got a chance to watch Clara playing a 3 on 3 game in which she scored 5 goals and one assist.  They won 21 to 20. The morning we left for the airport; Larry did something he had not done since he retired--scraping ice off the windshield. He would take a couple of months of hot temps over this scene.

Back to CA for one night, where we were treated to Mas' Chinese Islamic Restaurant and get caught up with all the activities we missed out on.  The one event Glorine made it to was Hunter's baseball practice which he is taking to heart.  He has great form in both pitching and batting.

The kids were off to school and Carmen off to work, before we flew back, we got caught up with Mike, who works as a national sales director based from home.  By the time we returned to Mexico, most of the snowbirds were gone and we used this new found time to re-engage with life in the village of Ajijic.

These monuments and sculptures line the Malecon, our mile-long walkway along the shores of Lake Chapala.  This Greek Labyrinth representing "a meandering but purposeful path" is a new addition to the Malecon.

Ajijic is our home!  We no longer fly north for six to eight months like we use to. However, we will continue with grandkid's birthdays, traveling and occasional RV trips.  The Papantla Flying Bird Men, a 600 year-old Mexican tradition, (mostly performed at beach resorts) have made the Malecon in Ajijic their new home.
