December started with a bang. Ajijic was one of a handful of Mexican
communities recognized as a Magic City. |
City and state dignitaries, along
with Steve Balfour (president of the Lake Chapala Society) were on hand for an
awesome celebration. |
|
|
We took a day trip to the village of Mezcala, about 15 miles east of Ajijic.
Mezcala Island, has a rich history of fending off Spaniards. The
population is still made up largely of their descendants. |
The village is about 5,000 people,
with little industry, other than tourism. Even though they claim not to
have been conquered, the steeples of the church tells a different story. |
|
|
On the drive home, our car overheated. A problem we have been having since
our trip to Texas in October. The damage was so extensive, the head
gadget and radiator were replaced--$350 USD. |
Wal-Mart and other stores in the area
have brought in self-serve sanitation stations with automatic thermometer
readers to minimize the spread of COVID among their customers. |
|
|
Volunteering brought hope to the many families affected by COVID. As
2020 came to a close, Glorine's initiative, FoodBank Lakeside, helped feed
1,044 families in nearby communities. |
Larry helped outline a strategy for
the Lake Chapala Society to
create a master marketing calendar for all its programs and events along with appropriate pre and
post media coverage. |
|
|
Finally, a month after it was first published Larry got his first copy of
Knowing the Deepest Happiness (www.deepesthappiness.org) |
In addition, Larry received a `media
kit` from the publishing company, including business cards, book markers and
post cards. |
|
|
Friends Brian and Marilyn stopped by for happy-hour While not what we would
like, we have all learned to adapt. |
Wayne's big birthday bash, included
dinner, a round of cards (boys won) and a delicious birthday cake. |
|
|
Another Sunday means another bike ride. This one from El Parque to the
Malecon along Lake Chapala in Ajijic. Another awesome day. |
We took this picture from our
mirador of Saturn and Mars aligning with one another. Could it be the Star
of Bethlehem? |
|
|
We put up some lights for our new patio, which turned out to be cool
Christmas decorations also. |
Our baby Christmas tree came out of
a box, stored in the bodega, along with all the decorations. The
poinsettia is for real! |
|
|
To minimize any threat of COVID, El Parque shifted from its annual
Christmas Caroling to a CAR-oling. The lead car played music! |
Our Sunday bike ride took us to the
deserted Malecon of Chapala. In fact, we were one of a few bikers on the
bike path. |
|
|
Maureen and Wayne hosted Christmas dinner with baked salmon and all the
trimmings. It is always nice to celebrate with family. |
Our patio is sporting a new
hummingbird tree, with two feeders and one stained glass hummingbird. Ajijic is
a great place to winter! |
|
|
Glorine lost another brother, Emanuel who was 85. He had recovered from a bout of
COVID, but died of complications. It is hard to believe that we lost
two siblings in two months to something that could have been prevented. |
We attended the funeral service online. His funeral service was
attended by his wife, Lorraine, two daughter Jodene (husband Mark) and Leslie
and his only grandson, Mason. |
|
|
On December 28, we celebrated our
52nd wedding anniversary enjoying the hot tub here in El Parque. It was another sunny day with
temperatures in the mid-70s. |
As we were riding our bikes on the
cobblestone streets of Ajijic on New Years Eve, we ran into this family enjoying
their last day of 2020 on horseback. Have an enjoyable 2021. |
