Roaming Through Retirement

January--Happy Birthday, Larry

This year, we celebrated the first "quiet" birthday at home, with a Jell-O fruit dessert and well wishes over ZOOM and phone calls.

We continued our Sunday biking ritual though the cobblestone streets of nearby villages.  It is a wonder what people do to spice up their homes. Speaking of homes, we had this hummingbird tree made to provide nourishment to the birds that winter with us.

In mid-January, we got two inches of rain, which is very uncommon for the middle of the dry season. Another bike ride and another unique mural on the side of someone's home.

The Lake Chapala Society created an LCS Angle program to raise funds to keep the ship afloat amidst COVID.  All the Angles got a table made with their names prominently displayed--including us!  For nearly 12 months, LCS was closed, which dried up most sources of revenue. Thanks to the generosity of its many friends, we were able to keep our employees on the payroll and maintain our beautiful campus.

As we were driving through downtown Ajijic, we caught this picture of a new cool mural being painted. On a day trip to Ciudad Guzman, about 80 south of us we saw this plant processing awesome berries.

The city is about 100,000 people, making it the eighth largest in Jalisco and tucked in a valley between two mountain ranges. This picture is of a small residential community located in downtown Guzman. It had a private entrance with a dozen homes.

This main cathedral, is located next to the homes in the last picture but closed due to COVID. We ate at this awesome pizza restaurant, staffed with a dozen employees, all practicing the new norm.

The large plaza included three kiosks, all used as shoeshine stands.  Wearing tennis shoes, we passed on the experience.  Ciudad Guzman is about ten miles from the Volcano in Colima, which is one of the most active volcanoes in North America. This sign provides evacuation rules.

Ciudad Guzman had another name, Zapotlan El Grande, which is displayed near another catholic church in the plaza. About once a week, we have been watching our grandchildren, Clara and Chase play hockey live streamed through Facebook.

We have always eaten good, but with all this newfound time, Glorine has tried out dozens of new and some old recipes.  Glorine also tried her hand at abstract art.  This is one of four drawing she completed.  She has since decided to spend time on other projects.

Larry is helping make breakfast patties and Italian meatballs.  We wrap them and put them in the freezer so they are ready to eat when we want them. Friend Kaye Thompson sent us this picture that was taken when two of Larry's books arrived at their home in Minnesota.  www.deepesthappiness.org
