March--Springtime

Each spring brings a time of rebirth, rejuvenation, and renewal. For us spring is the time when we say farewell to our winter paradise at Lake Chapala and head back to the USA and Canada where the temperatures are definitely moving in the right direction. And for us, this coming year will be filled with adventures of a new cultures and customs as we undertake the great RV Road Trip through Eastern Canada and the New England States.

Keep us informed by clicking on the email link Larry and Glorine.

MAY THE "CHI" BE WITH YOU! Larry has been doing Tai Chi with this group every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the past four years. Staying active and enjoying what we are actively doing is one of the keys to retirement. Submerging in a hot tub is great, but moving through five tubs filled with different hydrotherapies, from coffee to jamaica makes the experience fun and so much healthier.

The mineral mud bath is one of our favorite spa therapies. The volcanic mud and mineral water creates a topical solution that can fix most muscle, joint and skin ailments. If it doesn't help, at least the mud comes off easy. The task of finding a simple place to eat can often be an adventure. After a day at the spa, we found this great little French cafe with the entertainment of the evening being this lady singing opera. The food was great also.

One of the coolest and most elusive places in Jocotepec is called Salvador's (we think). The entire structure and most of the decor are made out of rock taken from the nearby mountains. They open pretty much whenever they want to. About 25 people helped celebrate February and March birthdays at this quaint pub/restaurant on the west end of Ajiijc called Pepe and Auras. For that many people, we even got live music thrown in.

After six years of being in Mexico on a 180 day Tourist Visa, we decided to go the next step and become Temporary Residents of Mexico. This status is only good for a few years, then it will need to be renewed. We have known these two lovely ladies from Guadalajara for six years. Tere and Yvonne were our weekend guests and joined us for this fun (but chilly) fundraiser evening of food and dancing.

Los Nino's de Chapala Y Ajijic (The Children of Chapala and Ajijic), where Glorine volunteers, hosted a dinner and dance party for one of their fundraisers. The TallBoys Band performed magic by turning senior citizens into teenagers. Friends Phil and Mary Pillsworth from NY hosted St. Patty's day dinner with the traditional Irish stew and all the green ornament they could find. Another wonderful event.

We attend Open Circle most Sunday mornings, which hosts a variety of presenters on diverse, but interesting topics. It's like Forrest Gump's box of Chocolates, "you never know what you are going to get". Friends Keith and Maureen hosted a Sunday brunch for this eclectic group of people from South Africa, Scotland, Canada and the USA. Along with an exciting conversation, we did get to enjoy one of the finest views in all of Ajijic.

A boy in a dress, let's make that a very big boy in a dress. Miss Conception is a female impersonator who performed at our local burlesque hall called "The Red Piano". S/he was one of the best performances yet. After a great meal hosted by Alan and Carol Bensman from Minnesota, Carol was showing us the art of taking lamb's wool and spinning it into fine threads, the old fashion way. She made it look so easy.

The Lake Chapala Garden Club typically hosts tours of well-manicured gardens in some of the most upscale home in the foothills of Lake Chapala. This one was different--they actually raise food. Larry was thinking of leaving retirement and returning to farming. But after he stepped in some chicken poop, got a whiff of goat manure and saw a grease stain on his pants, he decided it was too much.

Chocolate and Tea for the girls. Thanks to Marilyn Mitchell, a dozen gals got together at a new place for a tea party consisting of mini-sandwiches and desserts. Carolina (not pictured here) hosted a great going away party at her Casa in the heart of the village. Her son John was visiting from Seattle, which was a great change of climate for him

Glorine turned #!%&! this year and thanks to sister and brother-in-law Maureen and Wayne, she had one great big birthday party. Without giving away her age, she now qualifies for Medicare and is officially an "elder." We spent one last evening with friends Gary and Kay Thompson before they returned to Minnesota. We found this restaurant in Chapala that serves free and endless Margaritas, but found out all good things do come to an end.

Thanks to the generosity of Carol Dickinson a friend, who opened her beautiful home for snowbirds and year 'round birds to say farewell. About sixty people joined in the Adios Fiesta. Wow, what a pot luck!! People brought all sorts of appetizers, drinks and desserts--And what more can you ask for??

How about a little music! We got Noe and Poco (a preferred band in the area) to play and sing some of our favorite songs from the 60s and 70s, along with some great Latin music. They can set your toes to tapping. As organizers, we took the liberty to "pass the hat" for our friend Jeff Marsh, who suffered a stroke last December. Thanks to the generosity of so many that attended, we raised 7,000 pesos (about $560.00) to help with the cost of physical therapy.

Home tours are a hit, especially with so many beautiful homes tucked along the foothills overlooking Lake Chapala. Larry volunteered to be one of the drivers, which provided us access to four phenomenally beautiful homes. Of the hundreds of pictures we took of sticks, bricks and stuff during the home tour, this one stood out in Glorine's eye. Beautiful yet simple. She has always had a green thumb but it is not conducive to Roaming, Hey!

With Easter being early this year, we partook in this annual Easter pageantry. On Holy Thursday, Temple Guards, guided by Jesus' disciple Judas, entered the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives and arrested Jesus. On Good Friday, hundreds of actors lead Jesus in chains through the streets leading up to the front of Ajijic's St Andreas Cathedral, which has been transformed into a giant stage.

The tribunal of Jesus was set upon a stage showing all the might and glamor of the Roman Empire. The golden statutes in the background are real actors holding a still pose for at least 20 minutes. After hearing all the evidence and finding Jesus having done nothing wrong, both the Roman Empire Pontius Pilate and ruler of Galilee, King Herod were powerless to the relentless cries from the crowds to crucify Jesus.
March 2013 March 2013
After his sentence to death, Jesus was beaten, forced to wear a crown of thorns on his head and to carry a cross through the streets to a mountain top where he would be crucified. With the twelve disciples fleeing the area following Jesus arrest only Mary, the mother of Jesus, her sister, Mary Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene stood by to witness the crucifixion.
March 2013 March 2013
The reenactment of Jesus's crucifixion took place in the foothills north of Ajijic, where he was crucified and hung between two convicted thieves. A sign that read "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" was place on top of the cross. Following his death, his body was removed from the cross and carried off the mountain top, with thousands of people looking on. The Easter Pageant is said to be one of the best reenactments in all of Mexico.

After a nice afternoon nap, Larry was informed that Brian, Marilyn, Phil, Mary, Rick and Kathy were invited over for pizza and Mexican Train. Life is not all that complicated when you are retired, especially if you are married to Glorine. Living in the Moment does not come naturally for some of us. So once a week, Larry attends "Everyday Mindfulness" lead by Todd Miller who combines brain research, positive psychology, eastern philosophy and poetry to focus the mind.

Catching up!! Our friend Lil was in Alaska most of the winter to be with her son who suffered a serious aortic rupture. It is so great to hear that he is on the mend and she has returned to relax and enjoy the good life back in Ajijic. These two are normally happy, but Brian and Marilyn were especially happy showing us their new winter home. This beautiful two-bed, two-bath home has a grand view off their master bedroom and living areas.
