Roaming Through Retirement

September--Thank Goodness for Pfizer

Dakotah Meadow RV Park at Mystic Lake Casino was our home for most of September. Shortly after Labor Day, Larry was exposed to COVID and later that week he tested positive. We quarantined in our tiny house on wheels and not surprisingly, Glorine also tested positive. Our symptoms were nearly negligible, which we credit to having been vaccinated.

After our summer RV road trip through the west, we arrived in Prior Lake, just in time to watch our grand kids play sports.  Chase is into hockey and football. Chase has grown into a big boy and towers over most of his teammates.  He plays defense where he has caught some interceptions and recovered fumbles.

Clara is a sophomore and plays on the junior varsity tennis team, where she has been winning most of her matches.  In the winter months, she is busy with ice hockey and taking advance and honors classes. We celebrated Denise's birthday and Labor Day with a breakfast. Our new baby Weber grill did most of the cooking, including scrambled eggs, sausage, fried potatoes and crepes.

After breakfast we hiked the trails of the Louisville Swamp, a 3,600-acre refuge set aside to preserve the area for herons, swans, ducks, otters, wild berries and so on.  The only man-made feature are the remains of this 1880s farmstead, long abandoned due to occasional flooding.

Larry spent time in St Cloud with friend and former colleague Ken Maddux.  Ken is building a new home and spends his retirement fishing and crafting pottery. Larry spent six years as president of what was then St Cloud Technical College.  It has since been expanded to include lower division transfer degrees.

The Mdewakanton (mid-ah-wah-can-ton) nation is the richest reservation in America.  It employs 4,200 employees, running a casinos, an RV park, fitness center, hockey arenas, a signature golf course, etc. Each month the tribe provides over 75,000 pounds of food to local Community Action Partnerships. With COVID, people drive up to pick up a package of food including meat, fruits and vegetables.

Once we quarantined, we did not see much of Denise and the grandkids.  Here Clara is doing a drive by waving while learning how to drive.  Next summer she turns 16 and will inherit this RAV-4. In addition to biking and walking, we planned a three-week RV road trip along the Mississippi River to St Louis, on to Kentucky and along the Gulf of Mexico to McAllen Texas.  We will fly to Ajijic on October 20.
