Roaming Through Retirement

February--Putting Roaming on Hiatus

After 16 plus years of Roaming through Retirement, we are taking a pause from our "Roaming" website to focus on a new and unplanned chapter of our lives--getting Larry's health back to where it was before being diagnosed with leukemia. Instead, we will be using a new website called Caring Bridge https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/larrybarnhardt, where we will post updates of our life in Houston. This photo was taken on a Malecon near the western edge of Lake Chapala, enjoying the great weather with friends Rich and Nancy from Florida and Jean and Dan from Virginia who spent the entire month vacationing at Lakeside in a VRBO near us.

On their second day here, Rich and Nancy celebrated their 59 wedding anniversary with us along with friends Dan and Jean at this awesome lakeside restaurant. Here is the view from the restaurant. One of the coolest things about living at Lakeside, are the amazing lakeside sunsets, each so unique.

Dan, Jean, Rich and Nancy have been best friends for 40+ years. They rented a three-bedroom vacation home with a pool, and a hot tub for the month. Here we are on the plaza in downtown Ajijic. Dan was department chair at Virginia Tech and Rich's major professor when Rich got his doctorate. Later, they created a company that helped teachers develop curriculum to build courses, lessons, and exams.

We took them to the Jardin Restaurant, where we introduced them to two dishes--Aztec soup and Molcajete, a dish filled with cheese, shrimp, chicken, and sauces. Enough for leftovers which they loved! The LCS Concerts in the Park featured a tribute to the life of George Michael and the hits he made popular, including this one:

We met up with friends Kay and Gary, who left the brutal winter weather in Minnesota to enjoy six weeks in the sun. Here she is displaying a birthday gift from hosts Jean and Ron. Larry took this picture of the faculty and students from the University of Guadalajara-School of Architecture, who will be spending the semester helping the Lake Chapala Society update its Campus Master Plan.

Donna and Alistair were friends we met when we first arrived. Alistair has since passed away of Parkinson. Donna flew down to spend a week catching up. Glorine organized a luncheon for Donna with about 16 friends. Here we are touring the Malecon of Jocotepec. We spent time touring local churches and treated them to the best tacos in the area. They found a pastry shop and stocked up with sweet to last the month.

A must-do activity at Lakeside are the thermal hot springs. While Nancy got a massage, the rest of us took in the mineral hot springs, including coffee, wine, Bougainvillea leaves, etc. Our last stop were the famed mud baths, where we lathered on clay and let it dry in the sun. About twenty minutes later we soaked in another tub to clean ourselves off, showered and ate at Viva Mexico.

Our big day trip was to Guachimontones, an ancient ceremonial ruin occupied between 300 BC and 500 AD. In 1974 they were rediscovered and have since been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While the US has about a dozen ancient ruins, with Mesa Verde being the most famous, the Aztec and Mayan civilizations created over two hundred pyramids spread throughout Mexico and Central America.

Our tour guide snapped this picture in front of the largest circular pyramid uncovered thus far. This was our fourth trip to these ruins and we are amazed what new things we learn about these civilizations each time we come. About five mile west of the ruins is Hacienda El Carmen, which was built in 1628. It is now a hotel, restaurant and spa. We learned it was used in the film Monarca, a Netflix movie--a must watch.

Following our traditions Sunday morning routine of attending Open Circle, we met up for brunch with friends Brian, Marilyn, Jim, Margo, Jean and Chuck. Fat Tuesday is a big celebration, which we adhere to religiously each year. Chuck and Jean opened their home to a group of friends to watch the parade.

The parade included children in costumes, men dressed as women, floats, bands, and lots of horses. Rather than using confetti, they threw flour. Jean did not know the dangers of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. She got pummeled by flour launched from a canyon from the street below.

Friends Chuck and Jean were only in Ajijic two week- in between treatments for Chuck's cancer. They open their home for Marti Gras as they have done for years. Thanks to them, we got to spend time with many of our Ajijic friends, which are featured below. Glorine, with buddy Jean Mullineax, who has one of the largest in-home craft room's in Ajijic. She has gifted so many art pieces to us over the years. Ron does Tai Chi with Larry and we also play hand and foot with them at least once a week.

Of all our friends, Glorine is the only one who has a sister, Maureen, living here at Lakeside. They too, are our once a week dinner with a game of hand and foot. Andy and Randy have been a part of our circle of friends for years. They too are snowbirds spending their summers in upstate New York.

Thanks to a Spanish course we took our first year here in Ajijic, we met Brian and Marilyn. We not only spend time with them in Ajijic, but have traveled together in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Lil and Norm were single when we met them, but it did not take long for them to become a couple soon after they met. They are now married and live in Ajijic full time. As his camera notes, he is a photographer.

We first met Jim and Margo in Canada, visiting friends Brian and Marilyn. Once retired they made Ajijic their winter home. Both enjoy cards and volunteering. Maureen and Wayne were our first house guests and within the year, they moved to Ajijic fulltime. Along with a heavy social calendar, they do lots of volunteering.

After dusting herself off from all the flour, she posed for this picture. Dan and Jean got to see why Ajijic has been such a special place for us, beyond the ideal weather they experienced. Rich and Nancy could not say enough about being included in this Mardi Gras celebration. They enjoyed meeting our extended network of friends, which they felt part of as the party went on.

Too often, we are not included in pictures because either one of us are taking the pictures. So, to memorialize this awesome occasion we smiled for the camera.  The Behind the Walls Home Tour was a hit for our guests. They got to see four luxury homes that dot the landscape of Lakeside. Each were unique and mostly over the top.

With the weather being so mild year round, most homes extend the living area outdoors, which was a common theme in the four homes we toured. This home had its own mural painted on the front. While we could not see this from the street, because of the large wall, it was stunning once we entered their yard.

We toured Chapala, the second largest city on Lake Chapala. It is the county seat and a  large tourist attraction for expats and weekenders from Guadalajara. We got this prime table at Cozumel Restaurant with a view of the lake. It is unique in that meals come with bottom-less Margaritas, which we all partook in. We enjoyed being serenaded by the Mariachi band singing Guadalajara!

After a few Margaritas, who would not want to climb on the back of a pony. It was a photo op only, but also a way for one of the locals to earn a living. We attended two live plays, one a musical and this one, called Bare Stage. These three actors did an awesome job portraying characters living in a nursing home, just by reading their comic script.

Another Open Circle, another brunch, great conversation and another photo op with Brian, Marilyn, Chuck, Jean and Peter and Sybilla. Many of us got together at Adelita's to say farewell and best wishes to Chuck and Jean who will be returning home the next day for more treatment.

Jean and Dan joined Larry several mornings for Tai Chi. That were both new to it, but caught on quite quickly. Larry has an audio clip of both Qigong and Tai Chi to practice while in Houston. Meet Happy Larry, although, most days they are both Happy Larry. It is one of over one hundred snuggables friends Jean made as a part of a fundraiser for Operation Feed. This one was a gift we will take to Houston.

In addition, Jean gifted Glorine bags of thread and other embroidery supplies for a pass time while we spend the next few months in Houston. Neighbors, Alan and Claudette, gifted us these healing bracelets. Larry's is Shungite stones that warts off infections and Glorine's is Rose Quartz for her heart and emotions. What wonderful gifts!
