Roaming Through Retirement

July--Back with Family (Part 2)

Most of July was spent with Denise, Craig, Clara and Chase near their home in Prior Lake, Minnesota.  We spent a week in Wisconsin and a week in the 'old country' with family and friends in North Dakota.

We started out July celebrating Glorine's brother, Ray's 80th birthday on the 1st.  Their sons had a surprise birthday party which neither Ray or his wife Ida knew about.  At 1:00 pm the boys transformed Ray's three car garage into a party room.  Glorine is joined here by her two sisters, Marlene and Maureen, nieces and Ray's boys and grandchildren, all from Colorado.

Independence Day is a big deal in Mandan and a time for a lot of out-of-towners coming home. Larry and his twin Lorraine attended their 54th high school class reunion.  Glorine's nephew Tim, Nancy, Harrison and Olivia from the twin cities made it back for Ray's birthday and spent some time reminiscing with us in the RV.

Larry's cousin Dennis and Nancy made it back from Arizona to spend time with his sister Doreen and Gary.  We got a chance to catch up with them one afternoon. Friends Dennis and Betty Steele invited us to their home for a gourmet meal and a fun evening telling stories of our  adventures and good fortunes.

From North Dakota we took the RV to O'Neil Creek Campground in Wisconsin where Clara, Chase and their puppy Ebbe spent a week with us.     Wissota State Park, near Chippewa Falls, gave us an opportunity to do some biking. Denise opted to do some "speed" roller blading.

The state park had a wildlife museum, where the kid got to see and touch many of the fur from the animals that call this place home.  The campground has a creek flowing through it, which gave us an opportunity to cool down as we tubed down the 'lazy river".

The kids introduced us to GAGA ball, where you eliminate other players by tapping the ball with your hand on to the legs of the competitors.  Last person standing wins.  We spent four days at Stoney Creek RV Resort, about a half hour south of O'Neil Creek, that offered Laser Tag.  These warriors are ready to hunt you down!!  Larry surprised everyone with the most kills.

The State Fair was going on in Chippewa Falls, so we spent an afternoon their with the kids.  Click to watch Chase rooting for his favorite pig running the Pig Derby.
Click to watch Chase and Clara going on a Water Ball Ride.  They have great balance and coordination.

We went for a hike to "The Loft" an antique store near the campground. The kids loved rummaging through old stuff they had never seen before.  Within a ten-mile radius of the campground are large Amish and Mennonite communities. This is one of five horse drawn carriages we saw doing their daily chores.

The campground has an awesome pool.  It was not a heated pool, but that did not stop Clara and Chase from using it to cool down from the summer heat.  The campground had "Foam Fun" where the kids played in piles and piles of foam.  Didn't quite understand the purpose of it, but they loved it.

The campground has its own mascot--Morey, the Moose.  We stopped to memorialize our stay here.  The resort had "Christmas in July" where several campers decorated their sites and the campground had different Christmas themed activities for the kids.

Back in the Twin Cities and a bike ride around Lake Harriet in the Minneapolis area.  Its only three miles around the lake so we went around it twice.  Lake Harriet Band Shell had a band that entertained us with good old rock and roll.  Craig grilled hamburgers and the kids were treated to ice cream.

We watched Clara play in an-end-of season Softball Tournament. They lasted three games in a double elimination.  Ice hockey is still her first love.  After the game, the coach treated the girls to ice cream.  Click to watch how the ice cream is made.

Here Chase tried to hit one out of the park but had to settle for a line drive that took him to first base.  Like Clara, ice hockey is his favorite sport.  With Chase's birthday coming up in September, he is starting to dream about his upcoming presents.  Don't think this will be among his gifts but doesn't hurt to dream.

We met up with Ajijic friends Kay and Gary for lunch at the Curling Club in Chaska. A great meal and great conversation.  Maybe a place where we will take the kids.  We are so grateful that we got to spend so much quality time with the kids and grandkids this summer.  Can't believe how fast these kids are growing. Stop growing Clara!
