Roaming Through Retirement

October—Our Old Kentucky Home!

After two months split between Minnesota and North Dakota, we pointed the nose of the RV to Florida, which is where we are spending most of this winter. Our first stop was Kentucky, where we spent our first ten years together. Here we are on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University, dubbed the "campus beautiful" where Larry worked as a draftsmen while earning a degree in teaching.

We met up with friends Scott and Lois at their summer home at Green River Lake State Park.  Scott and Larry met in 1971 while in graduate school at EKU.   We took this picture out of the RV window of a dinosaur playing with the kids.  They were having a fun time.

We spent our time boating, fishing, playing cards, eating and talking about the good old days over a campfire.   David and Diane were among our first friends that we met in Kentucky.  Diane and Glorine worked for the city of Richmond in 1970.

While touring Eastern Kentucky University, we stopped at the "ravine" which is a large park in the center of the campus.  Is has grown a lot, but is still beautiful! EKU was noted as having one of the first degree programs in Trade and Industrial Teacher Education in the country and is what brought us here in 1969.

One of David's pastimes is building barn doors for their neighbors.  This one is above a fireplace and covers a wide screen TV.  Cool! We met up with Scott and Lois at Keenland, a race track near Lexington.   Studying the program kept us busy--but the effort didn't make any of us rich.

After a round of golf, we checked out all the work Scott had done to his home in Frankfort.  This patio brought us many fond memories over the years. Larry caught up with a colleague from the KY Dept. of Education--Arnold Wilson.  Larry considered him more of a mentor than a supervisor.  (Archived photo)

After leaving KY, we met up with Dennis and Nancy in Ashville, North Carolina.  They had just bought a new camper and are touring the east coast of the USA.   We stumbled across the "FREE STORE" on the campus of NCSU--Ashville where students can drop off and pick up clothes.  Dennis helped himself.

This museum in downtown A-she-ville, was one of many points of interest that caught our eye. Nancy posed as this recognizable picture of women going to work during the war effort.

We spent the next couple of days driving to Florida.  We stopped in Savannah, Georgia and biked through the many parks that make this city so beautiful.   Hurricane Matthew swept through here and other than downed branches and uprooted trees, we did not see any major damage.

After arriving in Florida, we spent our time prepping the RV for the winter and getting it ready for storage for ten days while visiting Carmen and her family in California. The day we arrived at Carmen's place was the annual Fall Harvest Festival at Golden Hills Elementary School, where our grandkids go to school.

Hunter won this mustache at one of the carnival's events and couldn't wait to show it off.   Sierra got her hair colored, then spent time working a booth selling refreshments for the Girl Scouts.

Dakota, the cat, spent part of the evening working with other Girl Scouts and her Mom (Girl Scout Leader) selling refreshments. Sierra's ninth birthday was a fun filled evening including a sleep over for many of her friends from soccer.  No one slept a wink!

Mike and Carmen have a great backyard for outdoor movies and the weather could not have been better. We watch Dakota at a swim meet, where she swam five events and won two - first place and two - second place ribbons.

Mike showed Glorine one of their magnolia trees and wondered why their blooms didn't last long?/? A fun tradition--breakfast in bed continues.  Sierra and Hunter are more interested in gifts than the food.

We celebrated the girls' birthday together at Chomps Rockin' Sushi and Teppan Grill in downtown Fullerton.  It was fun watching the chef prepare our private meal. We met up with Ajijic friends Phil and Mary, who also have a daughter living in Fullerton.  Mary looked great despite all the health issues she had recently.

Dakota's turn--breakfast in bed!  She ordered up crepes with Nutella, which she loved.  Both girls got pearl necklaces that we got while we were in Vietnam.  About 15 girls joined Dakota for her 11th birthday for games, an outdoor movie and sleep over. Even Hunter joined in on the fun. They all had a fun evening!

Big girl means a big bike and that is what Dakota got for her birthday. Can't believe how tall she is getting!  The Improv near Carmen's was a hit.  Glorine got picked to watch this magician turn a napkin into a rose.

We normally help out with a "project" or two while in CA.  Five hours later, we got this one done perfectly.   The day we flew back to Florida, the school had a "character parade," which is a disguise for Halloween.

Sierra dressed as Lady Robin, but couldn't bring her bow and arrow--no weapons on campus.   Hunter dressed as Waldo and Carmen as Sleeping Beauty.  Some kids never grow up!! It was a fun time!!
