Welcome to Nebraska! Nebraska is known for many things, but nothing more famous than the University of Nebraska Corn Huskers. No matter the town we traveled through, we saw signs like that noted above. To us Nebraska is home for Larry's brother Bob (and Francie) and four of their six children--Jackie, Rob, Cindy and Chad. It is also home for Glorine's niece, Roslyn Ressler and Larry's nephew, Greg (and Beth) Barnhardt. We spent a week in Bob's driveway and had several adventures, so noted below. Cindy hosted a couple of events during our visit. Here are Bob and Francie (seated) Cindy and her husband Roger, their three kids (Jordan, Isaac and Logan) and Rob, the tall guy. It was the birthday month for Roger and Rob. | Even though it was 95+ degrees, Cindy gave us an advanced class in GeoCaching. We found five sites, but only four caches. Here is Larry with the GPS he got as a retirement gift from Boise State and a cache that was in a can with a magnet attached to the side of this bridge. Click to zoom on picture.
Roger is the General Manager of the Frontier Harley Davidson store. Glorine and I thought about downsizing from our RV to a Harley with a side cart, but there was no bath room nor refrigerator. So we are still roaming America in Ol' Sport. | Here is another party hosted by Cindy. Among those there were Bob, Francie, Chad, Christina (Chad fiancee), Glorine, Cindy and "Not Gordon" we mean Jordan. (It is an inside joke.)
Boys and their toys. Here is Kyle, just back from a road trip through Kansas doing some rock climbing with his Jeep. | Here is Roger's 1950 GMC, decked out with lots of Harley decals. The oil under the truck is from some old Harleys (we think).
Time for a little "Boy Scouting"--Isaac is working on making a rope--the old fashion way. Bailer twine, some old hand tools and some fancy yarn to give the rope a unique look. | After a great meal, it was either cards or video games. So the family spilt up to show off their skills. Larry came in seventh, but then there were only seven card players. Glorine was the winner.
Lincoln is filled with spectacular sites. Despite the near 100 degree temps, Bob and Francie took us to the cities "Sunken Garden" to see some unbelievable plants. All are annual plants, which means they all start from tiny seedlings each year. Here it is in the dead of summer and these plants have grown like they were in a rain forest. | One of the themes of our 2-1/2 month trip was "eating." We found Famous Dave's, a chain of Barbecue Ribs and other such food. The touch of "Blues" in the background topped off the meal.
Jackie returned from her vacation just in time to see us off on the next phase of our excursion. Brunch at a local family owned restaurant gave us an opportunity to catch up. Hanna, Jackie's daughter, joined us. It is hard to believe that these kids are out of high school. | We had a short, but nice visit with Greg and Beth, as they just returned from a family reunion on the Knudson side of the family. Both are doing fine and liking Omaha. We went to a local grill and pub and found out that the Reuben sandwich was first created in Omaha. The Reuben was great, but the visit was much better.
We had made plans to go boating with Roslyn's new boat, but with the temperature hovering around 100 degrees, we chose a more relaxing day visiting at her home with her and her friend Gary Ward. Before going out for dinner, we searched the Internet for GeoCaches near "Old Market" which was an old warehouse district renovated into six square blocks of restaurant, pubs, and novelty shops. | Here we are at a micro brew in the Old Market. After dinner, we used our GPS and found a cache behind a flower pot, which took about 30 minutes to find. We took a travel bug, that wants to travel the USA. Who better than Glorine and Larry to carry out this mission. Another great visit. |
Arrived in Nebraska on Thursday, August 9 and left Nebraska for Lake Okoboji, Iowa on Wednesday, August 15, 2007.
